Shizuka YOKOMIZO
Shizuka Yokomizo (born 1966) is a Japanese artist and photographer based in London, best known for her evocative explorations of intimacy, distance, and the spaces between self and other.
Moved to the UK in 1989; earned a B.A. at Chelsea College of Art & an M.F.A. from Goldsmiths, University of London (1993–1995). Currently lives and works in London.
Yokomizo’s work scrutinizes the tangible and intangible distance between observer and subject. The tension between public/private, anonymity/exposure, and surveillance/exhibitionism. Her approach emphasizes a “strong sense of reciprocity” with subjects—an intentional counterpoint to the detached gaze typical in documentary photography
